Virtual Networking Basics
Computers in isolation cannot do much; they need to communicate! In traditional IT, setting up networks meant running miles of blue Ethernet cables, buying $20,000 Cisco routers, and configuring physical firewall switches.
In the cloud, you can build an entire enterprise-grade global network with software-defined networking (SDN) in a matter of seconds!

π Core Networking Building Blocksβ
1. π° VPC / VNet (Virtual Private Cloud / Network)β
- Your own logically isolated virtual data center network in the cloud. Nobody can enter or see inside unless you configure a doorway.
2. ποΈ Subnets (Public vs. Private)β
- Subnet: A smaller segmented partition of your overall IP address space.
- Public Subnet: Has a direct route to an Internet Gateway (IGW). Used for load balancers and web servers that must receive public visitors.
- Private Subnet: Has zero direct internet routes. Perfect for databases, financial ledgers, and backend microservices so hackers on the internet cannot touch them!
3. π·οΈ IP Addresses (Public vs. Private)β
- Private IP (e.g.,
10.0.1.5): Used strictly for internal communication between servers inside your VPC. Free of charge and completely invisible to the outside world. - Public IP (e.g.,
54.214.18.90): Globally unique address reachable by any computer on the public internet.
4. π‘οΈ Firewalls & Network Security Groups (NSGs)β
- Act as digital security guards that inspect every packet of data.
- You create Inbound and Outbound Rules (e.g., "Allow Port 443 HTTPS for all web visitors, but only allow Port 22 SSH from my home IP address").
5. βοΈ Load Balancers (ALB / NLB)β
- Distribute incoming web traffic across multiple healthy virtual machines so no single server gets overloaded or overheats.
6. π VPN Gateways & ExpressRoute / Direct Connectβ
- Secure, encrypted network tunnels connecting your company's physical office or home directly into your private cloud VPC.
7. β‘ Content Delivery Networks (CDNs)β
- Caches static images, CSS, and video files at hundreds of Edge Locations worldwide to make pages load in the blink of an eye.
π Networking Terms Cheat Sheetβ
| Term | What is it? | Real-World Analogy |
|---|---|---|
| VPC / VNet | Isolated Private Network | A gated community neighborhood |
| Subnet | Network sub-division | A specific street in the neighborhood |
| Public IP | Globally routable address | Your home's official postal address |
| Private IP | Internal address | Bedroom #2 inside the house |
| Firewall (NSG) | Packet filtering filter | Security guard checking IDs at the gate |
| Load Balancer | Traffic distributor | Airport traffic controller directing planes |
| CDN | Worldwide caching cache | Local convenience stores stocked with goods |
:::tip π― Beginner Golden Rule Never put a database in a Public Subnet. Always place databases in a Private Subnet and only allow your web servers to connect to it! :::
